A context of traditional patterns found in the Pacific Islands is used to present students with an activity to explore and learn about symmetry.
The user visits 5 islands and experiments with patterns that have either rotational symmetry, line symmetry or both. Then they use these to create a pattern of their own, and explore its symmetry.
This was developed for the New Zealand Ministry of Education by TKI Joint Venture to support numeracy for years 7 to 10 students.
The completed item can be found on Te Kete Ipurangi .
The PixelPump carried out the Flash development and ActionScript programming.
